Aruba Holiday 101: What to do and where to go

Lapped by warm, clear waters, the island of Aruba in the Dutch Caribbean makes for a truly idyllic holiday spot. It offers white sand beaches, water sports, nature parks and much more besides. If you’re lucky enough to be planning a trip to this part of the world, keep reading for top tips on what to see and do.

Hit the beach

Aruba holidays are all about the sun, sea and sand. The island is home to some of the world’s most stunning stretches of coastline, and Palm Beach in the north-west is one of the best. This two-mile strip of sand is the perfect spot for sunbathers, swimmers and snorkelers. You can also test your skills at a range of water sports there, and when you need a break from the beach, simply make your way to the selection of bars and restaurants that dot the shoreline. Another top pick is Eagle Beach, which is situated just a short way down the coast.

Sink beneath the waves at the Antilla Shipwreck

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not arrange a scuba diving trip to the Antilla Shipwreck? This 400-foot vessel sank during World War II and it is now home to an array of sea creatures, making it the ideal location for a dive. You’ll get to see everything from coral to lobsters, tropical fish, shrimp and more. The ship is still intact and you can explore its deck fittings, porthole and even the interior sections.

Shop ‘til you drop in Oranjestad

To experience the beating heart of the island, make your way to Oranjestad. The capital of Aruba, this port is a great place to indulge in a little retail therapy. Some of the best spots for shopping can be found downtown and in Seaport Village. Whether you’re looking to bag yourself a bargain in a local bizarre or you fancy splashing your cash in international luxury retail outlets, you should be able to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Take a tour at the Butterfly Farm

Be sure to add Aruba’s Butterfly Farm to your sightseeing itinerary too. Located at Palm Beach, this tropical garden is teeming with beautiful butterflies from across the world and you’ll have the chance to observe the insect’s lifecycle from chrysalis to winged adults. Tour guides are on hand to provide the commentary too.

Get close to nature at the Arikok National Park

Sticking to the nature theme, the Arikok National Park is another tourist favorite. This green space takes up a big chunk of the south-east of the island and it’s home to a host of creatures, including goats, donkeys, iguanas and a variety of migratory birds. You can cross the park in a four-wheel-drive vehicle or, if you’re feeling energetic, take the opportunity to hike.

Whatever you do on your trip, you’re guaranteed a great time. If you’ve already experienced the wonders of Aruba and you’ve got your own top sightseeing picks, why not add your thoughts below?
