Barbados’ BHTA Chief Rebukes Sandals Employees
Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) Roseanne Myers has told employees of Sandals Barbados to look at the “bigger picture” as they continue to promote the island as the ideal tourist destination.
“While you are in . . . that Sandals cocoon, keep an eye on the big picture destination because the work that you are doing becomes even more critical when we are out here fighting an economic battle that is becoming very difficult,” she said.
Myers was speaking last night at the second annual Sandals Prestige Awards Ceremony, which recognizes and honors the staff of the all–inclusive resort for their hard work and dedication.
The BHTA official said the island’s tourism product has done reasonably well in spite of the worrisome economic challenges facing the country. But she said there is no room for complacency.
With the country ranking 58th among the Caribbean nations in terms of travel and tourism competitiveness, Myers encouraged the staff to learn from their competitors and be a step ahead in the market.
“If you are looking at the big picture for destination Barbados, you have to look at what is happening in our source markets . . . and what is it we as individual businesses can do to weather those storms,” she said.
“When we look at the big picture, you have to say what can the individual companies do and then what can I as the individual working on a property like Sandals do?
“You have a lot to offer in terms of what you can show people is possible and once we can get together we can build this industry well beyond what it is today in spite of the challenges that we are seeing because we have a very good record and reputation in the market,” she added.
