The Dominican Republic Seeks to Protect Whales

Thursday, 14/08/2008

A proposal to protect whales has been made to the Dominican Republic’s senate, it has been reported. According to Dominican Today, the Executive Branch is seeking ratification of an agreement to promote protection, stating that the Caribbean country is one of the few places in the world used by whales as a mating area.

Furthermore, it pointed out that the Dominican Republic already provides protection to marine mammals through a decree issued in 1996, which led to the creation of the Marine Mammal Sanctuary along the nation’s Atlantic coast.

People who have chosen the country for their Caribbean off-plan property investment may have noted various recent news stories concerning the Dominican Republic’s efforts to manage its natural resources in a sustainable fashion.

Last week, Dominican Today reported that President Fernandez has launched a policy to swap traditional light bulbs with new eco-friendly replacements in 840,000 homes across the country.

In addition, the same news provider also recently reported that the government has signaled its intention to step up the environmental management of the country’s 500 rivers in order to protect their natural beauty.
