CHIC: St. Lucia to Hold Annual Rum, Food Festival in October

St. Lucia officials are planning to hold an annual rum and food festival this fall that will highlight the island nation´s culinary and musical heritage.

The three-day event will run from October 26 to 29 and will cost $500 for each guest, according to the St. Lucia Hotel & Tourism Association.

Don Werdekker, Executive Vice-President of the Curacao Hospitality and Tourism Association, and Jorge Pesquera, President and CEO of the Aruba Hotel & Tourism Association (AHATA), won the Caribbean Association Executive of the Year Award presented by the Caribbean Hotel Association.

The awards were presented during the American Express “Salute to the Stars of the Caribbean” luncheon, held June 27 during the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC 2006) at the Hyatt Regency in Miami.

American Express and the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) presented two well-deserved recognitions to individuals that paved the way for exceptional service and performance in the tourism industry.

The American Express “Salute to the Stars of the Caribbean” Awards Luncheon, held during the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC 2006) at the Hyatt Regency Miami, was the stage to recognize the winners of the 2006 “Caribbean Employee of the Year” and “Caribbean Supervisor of the Year” awards.

The Caribbean is a privileged region of the world, blessed with superb natural conditions to advance the travel industry as a source of sustainable development. Those were the remarks uttered by Berthia Parle, president of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) at the opening session of the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC) that got underway over the weekend in Miami.

However, Mrs. Parle warned about the importance of retooling local human resources in a bid to cope with new challenges and march toward higher levels of hotel occupancy, visitors and revenues.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., keynote speaker during the grand opening of Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC 2005) in Miami, Florida, urged regional hoteliers to put their smart money on the travel industry in a sustainable and environmental friendly fashion.

"One of the major problems in the Caribbean today is that every too often development is conducted with complete disregard to environmental policies, polluting and destroying nature and, at the same time, depriving local residents of their traditional resources," Mr. Kennedy pointed out in his speech.

Caribbean Escapes Cooperative Marketing (CECM), which markets luxury travel to more than a hundred resorts in 25 Caribbean destinations, launched the first edition of its "Caribbean Escapes" publication at the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC) held this weekend in Miami.

Glenn Harris, CECM founder and principal, said that Caribbean Escapes "represents a collaboration by more than 20 writers to showcase these upscale properties and provide travel information targeted at the affluent market."

Meanwhile, research conducted by Ypartnership states that the travel intentions of Americans remain strong as 71 percent of active travel households are planning at least one overnight trip during the next six months –the same amount as one year ago.
