RCCL Gets Loan to Finance New Ship

Regulators Ask for More Information on American Airlines-British Airways Alliance

Government regulators want to know more about how a proposed alliance between American Airlines and British Airways could affect competition on overseas flights. The U.S. Transportation Department asked the airlines to provide more information about the planned partnership, including its impact on Heathrow Airport in London, cargo operations, and service in Asian and Latin American markets.

 

Virgin Enters Talks over Bmi

The German carrier recently acquired a controlling holding in Bmi, the second largest carrier at Heathrow. Virgin, which has courted Bmi for a potential tie-up in the past, now sees a renewed opportunity to forge a link. “Virgin Atlantic can confirm that it is holding talks with Lufthansa regarding the future of bmi.

 

LIAT Pilots Willing to Work on Holidays if Paid

The Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA) has stressed that contrary to reports appearing in the regional media, its members are not opposed to working on Public Holidays, but are desirous of being adequately compensated as is the case with other employees in the air transport industry. This was stated in an official release issued by the Association.

Choice Hotels International just launched its new Ascend Collection, a group of historic, boutique and unique properties located across the U.S. and the Caribbean. Among the properties featured in the new collection are the Golden Hotel, located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the heart of historic downtown Golden, CO, and The Baechtel Creek Inn & Spa in the heart of California’s Mendocino Coast, just north of San Francisco.

TUI Travel Signs Travel Insurance Deal

It is being touted as one of the largest contracts of its kind in the UK and Irish travel markets. TUI Travel UK & Ireland will become an appointed representative of Mondial Assistance, and Mondial will provide underwriting capacity through its insurance arm, Elvia Travel Insurance International. Mondial will also provide claims management and international medical assistance for travelers.

 

Thomas Cook Chalks Up 50 Percent Spike in Operating Profits

Thomas Cook has reported a 50 percent rise in operating profits to £366 million and an overall margin on sales of 4.2 percent for the 12 months to the end of September. The strong results led Europe’s second-biggest travel group to defy the economic gloom and forecast a further growth in margin in the current financial year and annual profits of £480 million in 2009-2010.

Peter Yesawich, president and CEO of Ypartnership, expects more consumers to turn to travel agents when planning their trips in 2009. Meanwhile, research conducted by Ypartnership states that the travel intentions of Americans remain strong as 71 percent of active travel households are planning at least one overnight trip during the next six months –the same amount as one year ago.
